Quadcopter custom build with folding frame.

Recently as i am working on the quad setups of size 1600mm and 2000mm wanted to check all on the miniature drones first so thought to make a frame..

On surfing and googling “custom designed frames for Quadcopter” i got some intresting frames.. well now then i made one for myself lazer cut it and used screws the build is under process i will be using the following components:

2216 900kv Tmotor

18amp Tesc

Frsky x4rsb rx

Frsky QX7

Hubosd (PDB Only working)

Naza lite/V2/Pixhawk/APM have all of them lying of which naza is somewhat disy so it will be checked too.. for which the quad is made and if everything works good will confirm the frame and go forward with it ..

Now only thing left is putting up motor mounts and just the electronics i have a clone HUBOSD (Beware of clones, its better to buy a good one.. my osd isnt working and i can use it as a pdb on this frame).

Will update the progress here lets see…

Summary

A BIT OF HISTORY …

We analyzed the results on a thrust test stand next to all reputable motors, and matched them to the requirements of Mr.Steele’s reference motors. We found the closest match to his requirements, and produced 2 different styles to send for Mr.Steele for testing. After running each of them for a few days, we received feedback, made corrections on the motor, and re-made samples. After a total of 5 iterations and over 100 motors sent, we finally managed to isolate the perfect candidate. But the quest was not done! Next we worked on the finish. To produce a white motor, all tolerances were re-calculated. Each and every detail of the motor, down to the C-clip, was investigated, refined and tested. After almost 4 months of ups and downs, today we are able to release and stand behind what we believe is a motor that will cause a paradigm shift for this industry.

Well some details about the frame :

The Lumenier QAV-SKITZO Dark Matter FPV Freestyle quadcopter is a symmetrical X, ultra-durable, finely tuned airframe designed for high performance FPV Freestyle flying. The QAV-SKITZO was created in collaboration with and named after the flow master himself SKITZO FPV. This freestyle airframe has been designed from the ground up to withstand the rigors of freestyle flying like Skitzo put their airframes through.

The QAV-SKITZO features premium Lumenier carbon fiber with a beautifully finished chamfered edge, giving the quad a sleek look while also improving the durability by removing hard edges. Each plate is sealed with a layer of clear coat paint further strengthening each piece and giving it an awesome finished look. No rough edges or carbon dust to worry about, and no sanding required.

The airframe features removable 4mm carbon fiber arms and 3mm thick top and bottom plates. The arms are sandwiched between the bottom plate and 2mm battery plate giving you an incredible 9mm thick of carbon fiber at the center of the body. Each arm is secured in place with just 2 screws and a threaded aluminum bar on top. This allows you to remove 1 arm by simply taking out 2 screws with just 1 tool.

Lumenier QAV-SKITZO

Each 4mm arm and plates are CNC milled out of a solid sheet of premium Lumenier carbon fiber. The outer weave of the carbon fiber runs 100% down each arm of the QAV-SKITZO (0/90 weave), maximizing the strength of the carbon and arms. The center layers are offset at 45 degrees providing even and balanced strength throughout the entire plate.

The top plate includes two accessory antenna plates, allowing for multiple cable ties to lock down your antenna in place, or vertically mount your VTX and SMA connector. No more damaging the SMA connection on your VTX. Alternatively you can use the vertical antenna plate, enabling a vertical VTX install on the tail. The top plate also has a cutout allowing access to your VTX button and LED displays for easy channel adjustment. The 3mm top plate has multiple notches along the side making it a versatile mounting plate for a variety of HD camera mounts.

The airframe comes with high quality aluminum hardware. All screws are premium, black oxide steel. DIY : Connecting L3G400D Gyro with Arduino

Well thinking about making a Flight Controller based on Arduino after using Multiwii as the first Flight controller years ago… Have been familiar with the tuning and programming C code.

Also the basic copter has a gyro which basically helps to correct the orientation and alignment of the copter.

Roll and Pitch are corrected with the Gyro when you dont have any Tx stick Inputs Accelerometer helps in this too.

The L3G4200D is a 3-axis angular rate sensor, aka gyro/gyroscope with a user selectable 250, 500 or 2000º/Sec scale. I was about to write about what a gyro is, but Sparkfun has done a really great job of that, so to quote them:

Gyroscopes measure angular velocity, how fast something is spinning about an axis. If you’re trying to monitor the orientation of an object in motion, an accelerometer may not give you enough information to know exactly how it’s oriented. Unlike accelerometers gyros are not affected by gravity, so they make a great complement to each other. You’ll usually see angular velocity represented in units of rotations per minute (RPM), or degrees per second (°/s). The three axes of rotation are either referenced as x, y, and z, or roll, pitch, and yaw.

Connecting the L3G4200D with Arduino :

The L3G4200D has a lot of pins on it because it supports both SPI and I2C but also has some other features as well such as programmable interrupts. We are going to go as simple with this as possible.

The L3G4200D supports both SPI and I2C, but we are just going to talk I2C here. I2C is a 2-wire serial connection, so you just need to connect the SDA (Data) and SCL (Clock) lines to your Arduino for communication. On your Arduino (everything but the mega) SDA is on analog pin 4, and SCL is on analog pin 5. On an arduino mega, SDA is digital 20, and SCL is digital 21.

But other than Power, Ground, and the I2C pins, we just need to connect SD0 to 3.3v (to set the I2c Address).

Turnigy Evolution worth to buy??? (New Transmitter)

So, after selling my Flysky 9x i am looking for a new Transmitter for my kwads well purchased a taranis x9d plus which had some defects so returned and got refund so now its out of stock…

came across this beauty small gaming console look radio transmitter. It is only sold on Hobbyking and might be soon cloned and sold on Banggood or Aliexpress as the other models have been done like the I6 and 9x.

Great radio for the money, for beginners and seasoned racers.

Good for start for the budget yes the Rx is big but can be managed well if you are buying or thinking to buy this product i would say rather have a look on Flysky or Turnigy i6 and i6s Transmitters which are cheaper and better in this matter yes they are big with more weight but does the work for you and is a standard Radio.

This is what i feel about the Turnigy Evolution Tx :

All below points are experienced from various videos and looking at the specs of the radio.

CONS:

    1. Sticks are just too short for hybrid pinchers to get full throttle and pitch even when screwed out to just 3 turns on the screw.
    2. No neck strap loop. Could be an optional extra part that fits or a 3d model for printing.
    3. Stick springs could to be stiffer.
    4. Would be nice to have momentary buttons/switch for executing readouts.
    5. There are no triming switches for the gimbals.
    6. Has only 3 aux switches which makes the Tx very limited to indoor Fpv or racer class.
    7. Cannot be used for AP platforms as you obvsly. need more switches and modes and pots.
    8. Would be great if it showed battery voltage instead of a battery image.
    9. No range test mode (Not sure if this is a hardware or software limitation).
    10. Supports only 5 models so if you have more than 5 you need to keep a spare Tx.
    11. Rx of this Turnigy Evolution is hard to find also most of it is out of stock.
    12. Rx is bigger than a x4r.
    13. Gimbals of Turnigy Evolution are smaller than Taranis 9xd plus.
    14. No expo no rates change option in Menu.
    15. Speaker isnt that loud.

Pros:

Turnigy Evolution Digital AFHDS Radio Control System w/TGY-iA6C Receiver

The engineers at Turnigy have come up with another winner, the Turnigy Evolution. Designed with the FPV Drone flier squarely in mind, the Evolution features a striking new look and is amazingly compact. Pro version costs for around $1000 and others cost $450 each approx.. tbs is going to make videos how to setup and use these system and all …

Rent or trial the TBS EventTracker for 30 days from the time of purchase. You can run events with it for one month, after this you can return it to TBS for a $150 refund.

HOW THE RENTAL WORKS

When you receive the system it works for about 4 weeks (31 days minus shipping). You have enough time to evaluate and test the system before using it at one of your events. After the event is over you can pack everything up and ship it back. We will refund you $150 of your original purchase when we receive the timing box.

Clone Fever going on in RC Market for Cloning products….

Clones are always what becomes a problem for a designer and a startup company who started it from the core took so much of pain and procedures.

Yesterday was reading through my facebook feeds and got to see that there were some TBS Triumps antenna clones out in the market some even sold on Aliexpress i was to buy those as those were cheap but looked original as per the name of the product it said Geniune Tbs antennas, Well i was lucky that i didnt spend any money on those antennas cause i saw that Trappy from Tbs posted on Facebook that those are clones and many stores coming up with clone products…

Although these products are cheap claiming or revealing that they are originals by name of the product or pictures all that appears original isnt original specially when you get it for cheap pricing.

This are the fake chinese clones Of Tbs triumps and are short and shiny which is the sign of fakes also the price is 10-15$ cheaper.

Well how do we confirm that the products are original :

1.) Buy from Genuine sellers.

2.) If you know the producer of the product for eg. Tbs products you can contact them directly and ask if the products are original with the seller you are going to buy.

3.) Maintain good relation with Sellers and keep in touch with new products.

4.) Do not buy cheap products which are available at original website for more price than the mentioned price cause its obviously cheap. (Sellers who get bulk orders and sell also keep their margin and atmost sell the products at the retail price of the original site price).

Then i saw the post where Trappy got many posts where a hobby shop was claimed to sell clone props and clone triumps antenas.

Coming to the next today saw a post from Jack Deng from BrotherHobby their new series of motors  Tornado T1 1407 is copied by racerstar as claimed by Jack.

Now these types of clones are something different they arent clones of Torandoes they differ in color and datasheet specs but the teeth structure is same on the shaft which makes it clone of the Torando as per him..

Well i dont want to speak about if it is a copy or not but have used Racerstar 22o5 2300kv which performed very nice…

At the price of Rs.2500/- approx. the motors performed very nice.

Well so its like am not supporting the clones or cheap production of motors and stuff but attimes the cheap clones do work great for the price they are… except for the antennas and esc i would say…

Some motor clones are also very bad like the ones on aliexpress emax rs 2205 which had bad magnet in the motors.

KISS FC is a F3 flight a-like controller designed by Flyduino for Mini Quad. In this post we will walk through the features of the KISS FC, compare it to CleanFlight/Betaflight, and try explain briefly how to set it up with your rig.

So as you can see the below hardware specs, you would come to know that it doesnt has many things which a general Fc board would have and thats why Kiss Fc is simple and software is simple and easy to use.

The KISS FC is a 32-bit flight controller with F3 processor, just like the SPRacing F3, LUX or Tornado. The KISS FC is currently using its own custom firmware, but because of the same processor, Cleanflight might be ported in the future. The hardware of the KISS FC is simple, no baro, no mag, no flash memory chip.

Similar shape to the LUX F3, both look like an “H”. It uses solder pads rather than traditional pin holes. Direct soldering is to be done, rather than using header pins.

KISS FC AND KISS ESC

Kiss Fc as designed to work with and comes with Kiss esc but also it does works with other esc’s.

With the ESC telemetry, it is able to report current draw, RPM and temperature of each ESC, which then can be displayed on the OSD.

There are dedicated pins on the FC that receive telemetry data, one for each ESC (TRX pin – between PWM pin and GND). They are using hardware serial on the processor.

 

How is the Kiss Fc different from other F3 Flight controllers??

Most of the F3 Flight controllers these days run CleanFlight (CF) / Betaflight (BF), so we need to compare the new KISS FC firmware with them.

I think the 2 main differences that are really matters to general users are: the support for ESC Telemetry, and Felix’s custom firmware. Felix is the designer of Kiss Fc.

  • Cleanflight and Betaflight are open source Kiss Fc Firmware is close sourced.
  • CF and BF has  a complex GUI with many options to tweak the flight experience whereas Kiss Fc GUI is simple and has only 4 tabs with basic settings.
  • CF and BF there are CLI commands and CLI window there is no CLI in Kiss GUI.
  • As CF and BF are open source and rapid development and tweaking takes place there are often updates launched and to just fly the kwad its difficult to keep updating the Fc and test out the performance as they may change flight characteristics.
  • BF and Raceflight are trying to run as fast as they can with looptime (where Raceflight is doing 8khz at the moment). KISS FC still runs at 1Khz and reportedly having good result.
  • It is similar to compare Android vs IOS (APPLE).

Software Features

PID Controller

The firmware is written from scratch, and the PID controller is complete float point based. But there is no alternative PID controller choices like those in Betaflight or Raceflight.

PID values has decimals, that’s good for fine tuning.

GUI – KISS FC’s Configurator

Similar to Betaflight Kiss Fc Configurator has a Google Crome App which helps instant launch and setup the Fc. There are only 4 tabs currently – Configuration,Data Output,Rates,TPA and Esc Flasher.

The X-Racer F303 flight controller was designed for the serious racer. We have followed the idea of simplicity and kept the basic rugged design of servo style pinouts so you do not have to worry about the fragility of plastic connectors in a crash.

This X-Racer flight controller only comes in one version…ACRO! This is not a flight controller that is designed to fit the needs of everyone, it is a flight controller designed to fit the needs of racers and free style flyers.

The X-Racer is backed by the reputation of FPV Model giving you a flight controller that you can trust.

Differences Between V2.1 and V3.1:

V2.1 uses MPU6050 with I2C & spRacingf3 firmware.
V3.1 uses MPU6000 with SPI & X_RACERSPI firmware.

V3.1: The newest version of the X-RACER F303 is Version 3.1. We have listened to your requests for SPI and we have changed the MPU 6050 over to MPU 6000 in order to give you those faster loop times that you have been asking for. We have tried to keep the changes minimal with this and have left all of the previous changes that many requested the same. This board still comes with the through holes for Vbat, RSSI, and the buzzer. It also comes with the dedicated SBUS and RGB LED connections. X-Racer is designed for racers and acro pilots so we keep the design simple and durable. Have fun with it!

Attention: The X-Racer v3.1 is an updated design using a new gyro and it no longer uses the SPRACINGF3 firmware. Firmware for the X-racer V3 “X_RACERSPI” is on Betaflight.

 

FEATURES:

  • Built in high capacity black box featuring 16mb flash memory. This will allow you to store an entire days worth of flights while you are out in the field burning through multiple batteries and flights. Next generation F3 processor for efficient flight calculations and those lower loop time youve been reading about.
  • The size of the flight controller follows the form thats so typical in all the others allowing you to mount to the majority of the frames out on the market without the need of changing mounting holes on most base plates.
  • 8 PWM I/0 lines for ESCs and added options you may choose.
  • Supports Sbus, SumH, SumD, Xbus, PPM, PWM recievers but has a recommended and weight saving direct connection specifically for Sbus, which is our recommended connection for flight control.
  • Buzzer port for audible lost model location.
  • Convienent pin outs for easy, reliable soldering.
  • Only available in Acro style, no barometer or magnetometer.

SOFTWARE:

The X-Racer flight controller runs on the open source Cleanflight software and its compatible with the Boris B. Betaflight firmware. The hex file to use is spracingf3 hex.

WARNINGS:

Failure to adhere to these warnings will void your warranty and destroy your flight controller.

  • Observe polarity at all times. Double check all connections before applying power. It is very common for users to accidentally reverse polarity, try not to let it happen to you.
  • After double checking all connections its a good idea to triple check connections…positive to positive, negative to negative.
  • Make certain all channel inputs match corresponding outputs or else undesired flight characteristics will happen.
  • Keep magnets away from flight controller.
